Re: Sneak Peek for "Atonement", a Next Generation RPI

Atonement RPI is now nearing the half-way point through its Open ALPHA phase of development, and already, the community response to what we are doing has far surpassed our expectations. With a playerbase that most independently-produced MUDs would be happy to achieve, we continue to grow week-to-week. Meanwhile, the story continues, as players shape the events that unfurl based on their own actions - their own society, which has been built-up 100% from scratch (literally scratch, these characters suffer from amnesia!) by players-only through in-game roleplay. Meanwhile, those who are combatant-oriented have faced off against challenging AI that is capable of using group-tactics, setting traps, making use of the environment against characters - and otherwise finding ways to invade safe play areas and instill fear in an immersive way. We have received multiple comments from players stating that they have had Atonement nightmares, infact!

What you can expect in this second half of Open ALPHA:
- Many more short stories to be added to our growing collection of finely-written canon.
- Plot-twists and archs, written by professional authors and experienced roleplay administrators.
- Original, high-quality art dedicated to the story of Atonement.
- A changing focus towards Player-vs-Player combat as part of the immersive storytelling.
- Ever-evolving, frighteningly clever and dangerous NPC Artificial Intelligence.
- A ever-growing playerbase.
- New and improved forums.
- Sleeker website and web-client improvements.
- A continued effort to improve our fun, simple and immersive character-creation process!
- A staff dedicated towards not just creating the most immersive, best storied RPI ever - but achieving a much higher level of gameplay through features such as robotics, computer hacking, dynamic chemistry, realistic somatic affects, medicinal research and cures, dynamic and addictive trap code, an unparalleled in-game communications system, ship-systems that must be maintained and used to customize, change and sustain an environment that is capable of supporting human life in-game. We have set the bar high for ourselves to achieve these goals, in hopes that our work will inspire a new generation of MUDs that take heart in creating a unique experience for their players.
- And so much more. And all of this, before we reach BETA!

Try ALPHA today:

And just to give a well-deserved peek at the first of our artist's renderings for the game, below is an outside look at the current setting for AtonementRPI - Open ALPHA:

Re: Sneak Peek for "Atonement", a Next Generation RPI

Atonement has officially opened its doors for character generation. We are entering an open BETA phase of the game, after an extremely successful open ALPHA last year. This means that we have introduced an incredible number of new features, vastly expanded the gameworld and documentation, and are preparing to stabilize our engine so that we can release it as open-source for future RPI designers to use free of cost. We predict hundreds of character applications that will have to be sorted through in the next several days, so it is a very exciting time to get aboard our flagship RPI. Visit the website, browse our buzzing forums, hang out in our chatroom or Guest Lounge, read our original short stories and documentation, log into the game, play with our realistic gun combat system by taking on hoards of zombies, create a character and prepare for the first great news in the MUDing Community of 2011!

The variable item system and layering of clothing is really cool and exciting so far.

Re: Sneak Peek for "Atonement", a Next Generation RPI

Atonement has now had its doors open for a few days, and I can only be pleased by the outcome thus far. We have an extremely active playerbase, a lot of great roleplay spurred on by both our players and our staff of Storytellers -and some amazing features that you simply will not find on any other game in the world.

If you love Post Apocalyptic fiction, and/or if you are a fan of immersive roleplay, why not check out the hottest, most exciting new MUD of 2011?

Thumbs up Re: Sneak Peek for "Atonement", a Next Generation RPI

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to post this to help get some interested players come and try Atonement Beta. It's the best RPI that i've played in the past 12 years of MUDding. I've been a veteran of Armageddon, Harshlands, Shadows of Isildur, so anyone familiar with these should be able to pick up Atonement easily, especially HL and SoI because the codebase is pretty similar and derived from the RPI engine, but with plenty of modifications and enhancements.
It is set on the moon in 2525, many years after the Earth has become uninhabitable, and the colonists on the Moon once had a great society known as Utopia, which was felled centuries ago by plagues, leaving pockets of habitability on the moonscape, one of which the game is centered around. A small town surviving in the Moon's wastelands is Grungetown, the current center of play. It is controlled by four main Families, each with their own distinct personality and flavor, that using a new Turf code system, can compete and vie for control of the town's neighborhoods, block by block. There is also an all new gun code, where getting shot is not an insta-kill, but it is very possible to quickly bleed out or pass out from trauma if not treated immediately. Additionally, only the most basic of things are purchasable, with the vast majority of items all being craft-able by players and then sold through pc owned shops, auction houses, or directly.
It's been open for about two months now, and is only getting better. The coding and crafting staff have been very active with frequent updates, both major and minor, including listening to the player base on the forums and fixing perceived problems to make the game better. And not to forget the RP staff, who regularly will intervene to animate mobs and throw interesting echoes and events to groups or solo players. There's too much that's great about this game for me to list them all, and I know I am missing plenty so just come check out the site, make an account and submit a char. You'll be in Grungetown within a day and be part of the excitement.
I highly recommend come checking this MUD out to try your hand at being a post-apocalyptic moon survivor, mutant or cyborg.
Much more information can be found on the website, forums, and in-site chatroom.
