NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Just checking to see if anyone else is participating in National Novel Writing Month! If you are, I'm looking for writing buddies so we can give each other moral support during the process.

Look me up at - 1,042 words and counting!

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Whoa! I wasn't aware that there was such a thing. I've been trying to work out the history and lore for the MUD I'm working on and now I'm interested in possibly entering NaNoWriMo to improve on it.

Thanks for bringing it to the attention of those of us who haven't heard of it.

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

I am in.

Only breaking 1124 words currently, but it has helped me write a dwarven creation myth, and start on a war far back in our world's history. A line from the first page of that history had a town name we do not have, and we are now planning on adding the ruins of that town (soon as I figure out how it was abandoned or destroyed).

Not sure I will reach 50,000 words, but it is a good break in between coding for me and has brought in some new thoughts.

It has inspired me. Thank you.

Is it too late for me to join in?

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Anyone can join in, but it is a hefty goal to reach (for me at least). I thought "Sure, I haven't written anything longer then a short story in decades, but I can do 50,000 words in a month."

I am now just over 7,000 words, with more then half the month gone. I also have a new found (or perhaps rediscovered) respect for people that write novels.

I am pretty sure I will not reach 50,000 words by December, but it has been fun interacting with some of the people on the forums there, and I have read a lot about writing in the meantime (on the site, their forums, my regions and from their weekly email pep-talks). I am actually pleased with what I have written so far, and I will continue on with it even after the month is over. It is giving me one heck of a chance to write the histories and back stories for the world on which I usually spent my time coding (and asking others to write the histories).

I look forward to next year's challenge as well.

So if you have a novel popping around in your mind, and want to try to bash as much of it out as you can in 14 days, I say give it a shot!

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Mabus it was nice to read your reply, thanks. Yes, the forums are a gem. I do have an idea floating in my synapses and a good one... But i get discouraged because i think of how I might fail before I even begin writing, or how corny it may turn out. It's a quick way to kill enthusiasm * sigh*
What I don't get is why it has to be November, one of the most hectic months of the year.

What are you going to do with your work once you're done?

Offtopic: is ToC in beta? If not, why are there not more players online? Looked like a great mud!

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

I just want to mention Violette that the goal is to get the words down, so if they're bad or good it's OK. Just the process of getting the words down is major. 50,000 words by the end of the month, 3500 a day, definitely is a serious undertaking but I say go for it! Just start writing and don't self-edit too much.

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Don't fear failure, accept that it sometimes happens and try anyway.

"Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt."
-William Shakespeare, "Measure for Measure", Act 1 scene 4

No idea. Best to ask this on their forum, perhaps.
Some of it will end up as web pages for role-play information, providing "official" documentation. I may release the thing, or even publish it through a "Print on Demand " service. I don't know, to be honest.

I am writing the story currently, not working on what comes after. But thanks for asking!
Still in "perpetual alpha". We consider it a text-based art project more then just "a game", though it is playable. We are just setting up a canvas for others to come and enjoy, and we (strangely) do not equate player numbers with the joy of working on a world. We do not really advertise (registered at sites like these, but that is about it), but people that drop by are always welcome. [/shameless plug]

Good luck to everyone writing!

By coincidence, I started writing a book as well in my free time this month. (Haha. Free time!) While I didn't hook up with Nano, I still like to use it to motivate me when I see all these people getting their word count up. Unfortunately, I'm a bit behind since I had to spend nearly two weeks doing research for my book.

Bump!

It's almost that time again as October winds down to put on that old thinking cap and write, write, write!

begins November first.

Good luck again, Mabus! How'd your efforts from last year go?

I'm still working on the same book and have had tons of interruptions.

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

I only got to a little more then 12,000 words. While I could feel a sense of disappointment from not reaching 50,000, instead I chose to enjoy the fact that I got something done. I also met some very nice people (and even kept in touch with a few throughout the year), and I really enjoyed it.

I plan on continuing where I left off from last year (terrible, I know...) as there was a female assassin character that I am really wondering about. I have to find out what she did after the previous chapter, and the only way to find out is to write it.
Wishing you amazing production!

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Good luck to you all. My plan is to write 50,000 words *specifically in and around/about* OtherSpace proper during the month of November. So, rather than focusing on a book, I really want to invest a lot of effort in fleshing out the lore of the new universe of OS. Another book might be in the cards next year. We'll see!

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Another year under 50k for me. A mere 12k+ this time out, but still more then I would have written if I would not have participated.

Congratulations on reaching 50k!

Re: NaNoWriMo: Are you in?

Congrats, guys! You're doing better than me. I got a whole 0 words written on my book, but I'm hoping the time for that will come soon enough.

I'm putting it on my New Years list to make sure I participate next year.
