Re: Alliance of small quality MUDs
This is crazy enough that it just might work.
Have you thought about using a portal site like MudPortal? That might really help the barrier to entry for phase 2. I'm not sure if its client supports sounds though. |

Re: Alliance of small quality MUDs
The app assumes an HTML5-capable browser, so adding a sound would be a matter of minutes. There just has to be some general agreement on what events would trigger what sound. After that, someone can write the several lines of code that each participating MUD would need to run on their page.

Re: Alliance of small quality MUDs
Not much work involved in getting the existing client to play a sound, especially if you are already recognizing it by one of the multiple ways it announces itself. You can do:
Just preface < and > characters with ESC (ASCII decimal 27/hex 0x1B/octal 033). Obviously, you can play your own sounds as long as they are web-accessible. You can even record a sound saying "A new player has logged on to Suchandsuchia". Also, for just a ding sound, the app will now recognize ASCII decimal 7, the conventional TELNET BEL character. Re: Alliance of small quality MUDs
Hmm, the two muds I'd have submitted are GateWay and Rocky but GW only sends a msg to all when a NEW player is created. Rocky is totally silent. I guess they are out then?

Re: Alliance of small quality MUDs
I think ForgottenMUD's idea is to sign up admin/coder types who can make the minimal amount of code changes required on the server to alert when a newbie player logs on. A client with audio triggers is not much of a problem, even if it's not web-based.
By the way, this idea is exactly the kind of collaboration I wanted the MUD Portal app to help folks with. A small team of indie devs can be much more effective at free promotional activity than any single admin. I have some ideas in the works about viral means of generating traffic to the MUD Portal site, but I won't lie: my enthusiasm is proportional to how many admins / devs are actually making use of the app. Last edited by plamzi : 01-19-2014 at 11:38 AM. |

Re: Alliance of small quality MUDs
Either should work now.
The browser will cache the file after the first load. |
