Hi, I'm a newbie coder with a couple years of college computer science (so far) and no mud experience. However, being insane and also incapable of saying no to my boyfriend who thought it'd be cool if we made a mud together, I'd like to get a start in mud-coding. So d'you guys have any recommendations of useful books I could find on the subject, or any advice in general? Much thanks!

It might be a good idea to start out by reading the code for a relatively simplistic codebase (Diku or one of its derivatives, i.e. rot, rom, smaug, merc).
You'll also want to take a look at something like |

Heya,
I don't know of any literature from the top of my head. But looking at code is a good way to start, then there are several coders communities which might have tutorials and stuff. I'd say look there, and for any problems you write to email listings or the coders forum here. There are always people wanting to help you out. Greetings Dre |

I picked up a book called Sams Teach Yourself Linux ISBN 0-672-31524-6 by John Ray for 13 bucks. It's not an in-depth how-to book but it gives the tools necessary for learning how to navigate, some shortcuts, some tables of commands and some decent guidance on how to get started.
