Hi, thanks for reading.

I'm on a library computer that's pretty well 'locked down' it seems.  Telnet, or any exe's aside from Internet Explorer are disabled.  It seems like muds with java clients try to work but cant connect due to the port # (i assume).  Soooo...i'm wondering if A: Anyone knows of a mud with a java client that connects on port 23, or B: A totally different approach to try.

Thanks for any help!

EDIT: Oh, one more thing....downloads/installs are disabled too

Find a friend who will grant you shell access to their home system running on port 23.  Or set your own to run on port 23.

EDIT: Oops, didn't notice you said telnet was disabled.

Oi, that is one thing I hate... libraries which feel compelled to nail their computers down like that... some people.... ick

Try bringing an old DOS boot disk and putting that in the drive and resetting, but that's a pretty long drawn out solution which may or may not work

If they have telnet blocked by run line or other, but allow IE.. as long as it's the menu itself locked, and the application isn't frozen you can still telnet. Lets say the name and port of the mud was: on port 4059

in the URL bar for IE, type

and hit enter, if the app is not frozen or locked by the security package, it will open a telnet window to on port 4059 . If that doesn't help any whatsoever, drop another msg here letting me know and I'll see what I can concoct.

Hi again, thanks for all the feedback.

Zaroth: I've tried connecting through the address bar. It says "Connection failed because telnet.exe failed to run" or something to that effect (affect? eek, lack of sleep is BAD!.

erdos: What is this "friend" thingy you speak of? As to the DOS boot disk, wouldja believe....they have the actual computer box holed away in some unknown location. All i have access to is the monitor and keyboard...oh, and the printer.

One good thing i confirmed is that JAVA clients do work, it just depends on what port they are conf'd to connect to. So, i think it's a matter of begging my mud to change theirs....<snort> ack, milk came out my nose on that one!

Again, thanks for all the help guys n' gals.

I'm not sure this will work, but it might be worth a look...

"Welcome to the website of Mosha. The employees of Mosha combine years of programming experience with youth and fantasy. This has resulted in various applications on this website, among which the famous HTTP to Telnet gateway. This will allow you to telnet through almost every firewall with the use of a webbrowser. Since most firewalls do not allow telnet, this is especially at work."
