This is a discussion on "The latest Armageddon review..." in the Top Mud Sites Tavern of the Blue Hand forum : I would like to point out the latest review posted by Zhunga, on Armageddon Mud. The review was well written, to the point, and above all, objective. We need more great reviews like this, rather than the fluff and flames that are normally posted. The review: http://www.topmudsites.com/cgi-bin....um=6907 Anyway, just wanted to show that some good can come of the reviews section. -WP Also... It's a shame Zhunga decided to leave us over the Saturday downtimes. I'll agree it's very irritating, because that is the one day that I, too, get completely to myself. Alas, it is apparently the same for the Immortals, and since they're using that downtime to improve an already stellar game, I won't complain. Hope you return. |

I use that downtime to play the wonderful game of Life.
Go watch movies. I watched the new Star wars Yeserday. |

People like you don't deserve the wonderfulness of Star Wars.
IMHO anyway. <3 Kopri |

Out of curiosity, they DO they go down for 10 hours every week? I know the answer broadly is 'maintenance' but what maintenance requires you to be down regularly? Not a flame, just curious.

They add Code. For instance, They have added these major changes in the past month or so.
"Contact now allows you to specify one or more keywords to reach the person you want. See help contact for more information. You can now rest/sleep/stand at/on appropriate items. See appropriate helpfiles for more information. You can now emote while changing position. See 'help command emotes' for syntax and details. A long standing bug in movement has been fixed (we hope). When following someone faster than you, you will no longer accumulate unending lag but will instead fall behind them and stop following after a few rooms." They added a Script In-game where you can Rent an apartment from an NPC to store your goods and have Mudsexx and get assassinated. They fix typoes and bug. They Load tons of things for the PC Merchants in the Three Selling Merchant Houses. For instance, the Clothing and fine arts house, House Kadius has shops and every week those shops' inventories rotate to keep up with the Current Trends In-game. They Do the Ten Hours for that because not every Imm can be on in the same two hours, so they make it broader so the Imms can do things when they want. They aren't paid for it. |

Ahhh. I didn't actually realize Armaggedon was DIKU. I had been under the impression they were running a semi-custom engine. Dunno why I thought that. Makes sense now.

Armageddon's a "Dikurivitive" or whatever the catch-phrase of the month happens to be. It started with DIKU but its current incarnation (from what I've read on their weekly updates and history notes) is far removed from the original stock. It includes scripts which were never even imagined when DIKU came out, its own scripting engine, etc. etc. etc.
There are other things that they do on saturdays - such as implementing and loading up NPCs and items on merchant NPCs - things they -could- do during the week, but if the game crashes before it resets they're SOL - plus they'd have to (theoretically) reset the game whenever something new shows up. So rather than reboot a few times a day (since they really DO implement that much stuff! |

It's not that hard to have an OLC system where it's real time and changes things instantly for builders, and coders don't code while on the mud, code can be written with pen and paper while you're in a meeting with your boss,
Well I guess my point was I don't see it as a day for implementation necessarily, but more or less some downtime for the staff, as an RPI you can get really swamped as a staffer I'm sure so it's their "freetime" to bs with other staff and not 50 players online to deal with. -D |

I guess our average age of the player population is much higher than an ordinary MU* of this type (In last GDB post, it was around 21-22). Please do not misunderstand, I am not saying 16- can not RP or such, but that's a fact that ARM expects some maturity... Not for light hearted really.. On the other hand, you can not know if this mud is for you or not if you do not try your chance. From another review: Quote:
