This is a discussion on "Old muds" in the Top Mud Sites Tavern of the Blue Hand forum : I was wondering if they are any muds from the early days that are still running. 'big' means heavily crowded(+100 players online) 'normal' means crowded(50-100 players) 'small' means some players(20-50 players) 'dead' means not much players(0-20 players)... |

It really depends on how precise your definitions are. Obviously there were no Diku muds around before 1990, and Gemstone was still on version 2. LPmud wasn't written until April 1989, although Nanvaent also opened later that year and is still running. Apart from that, the only pre-1990 mud I can of is MUD itself, of which there is currently "an accurate reconstruction" running today.
The most popular muds seem to be those which were written in the early-to-mid 90s. The pre-1990 muds were generally pretty clunky and old fashioned, as mudding hadn't really reached it's "golden age" yet. |

Makila,
I believe based on the criteria you asked for, that Dragon's Gate was around pre 1990, and is 'big'. I'm sure there are more. *edited to add the word big |

Don't know about other muds... But NannyMUd opened in april 1990 according to the mud website. I also think that the guy who created the mud still run the show there.

I surfed on the internet and found out that they are only a very few muds left from the early days.
British Legend is probably the oldest mud in existance, but note that the mud is in it's 3th reincarnation. The PC-version started up in 1985(the mud itselfs is running since 1980) and the mud ran for almost 14 years on compuserve untill they removed the mud at the end of 1999. The mud got restarted a few months later and is still running. The oldest muds that really survived are from the years 1988 and 1989.(If anyone can still find a mud with a huge playerdatabase before that time, please feel free to mention it) To name a few : dragon's gates, Kadiva, Eternal Darkness , Aladon MUD(a russian mud! Makila. |
