This is a discussion on "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" in the Top Mud Sites Tavern of the Blue Hand forum :

Just wanted to take a moment to wish all the admins and players who lurk at Top MUD Sites a happy new year! Anyone got any interesting resolutions? (I don't, aside from my resolution to stay fiscally solvent!...

Hopefully most of us have had a good year.

But I cannot get my mind off the disaster in Southeast Asia.

Over 150 000 dead. Almost a week after the tsunamis there are still over 4500 Swedish tourists missing in that area, many of them probably dead. And we are a comparatively small nation.

But worse than anything is the situation for the locals. Those people had very little before, now they have nothing. The infrastructure, their homes, their fishing boats, their families - all is gone. The tourist industry, which used to be their biggest source of income, will be devastated for years to come.

So even if I am grateful that my neighbours just came home from Phuket safe and sound, there are so many others who will never come home.

So, during the New Year to come, spare a thought - and if possible some money too - for the victims of that disaster.

Molly, those numbers are extremely high. However for me they're fairly meaningless until I put them into context. One context is the dead equals the entire population of Blekinge County. Imagine waking up and everyone in that county being dead. To me, that's just really shocking.

As for new years resolutions, I don't do them. I've always said celebrating NYE is illogical as there is no difference between 2 days before NYE and 2 days after NYE. So therefore having a resolution at the start of the year makes little sense. At the start of the school year? Yes. At the end of the school year? Yes. At the start of the year? Seems pointless.

I'll just pack up the party favors, the well wishes and the queries about resolutions, then. Party poopers

Yeah, let's all just kill the New Year with posts about people dying. My resolution is to try to get better at games. I never have a lot of time to play games, so most of the time when I try to play NCAA Football 2005 with the guys, or another game I'm not naturally good at, I get the crap beaten out of me. So my resolution is to get better so I can beat the guys instead of them beating me.
