This is a discussion on "The Perfect Thieve's Outfit" in the Top Mud Sites Tavern of the Blue Hand forum : This isn't exactly a MUD topic, but it is an online RP game one. This isn't exactly a MUD topic, but it is an online RP game one.
I play AD&D over mIRC with 10 or so people, including the DM. I am the only rogue in the group and I have recently come across a great ammount of money. My character has lived in squalor and never even had a decent meal until he met up with the group. The sponsor of the group, an DM ran NPC, has notified that I was hired to make sure the group's now official guild succeed, no matter what. Steal, lie, cheat, rob, it doesn't matter, just make sure it succeeds! My character has therefore decided to have made for him the 'darksuit' of his dreams. It is not to be fancy or particularly eyecatching, rather simple looking outwardly. One of the campaign is a skilled tailor and considers this the challenge of his dreams. I'm wondering of any of you out there would have any suggestions, from cloth and excessories, to even magician like tricks. Basics and ideas so far: It will consist of three pieces. Shirt, pants, cloak. It will all be of a midnight blue color, or ultra-dark grey. Shirt: The shirt will have a large hood of silk to cover my head with a piece of fabric to pull across my throat and face to only show my eyes. I will have a slightly thick collar that will secretly hold a wire blade to cut through bars if I am imprisoned. In the cuffs will be a strangling cord just in case, though my character prefers to leave things alive, having a chaotic good alignment. It would only be a last resort type thing. In a long, small pocket-like place sewn around the back of the shirt with a cord/string hidden through it, with one end attached to the cuffs of one of the wrists. The string can be pulled from the other sleeve and can be tied to something small, or maybe have it already tied to a small bag or such or have a sticky end... An object inside the bag or tied or stuck to the string can then be pulled in by extending the arms. (saw this on a magic show) A pouch in the back of the shirt to hold my characters trained ferret. A dagger is to be hid within the fabric of his upper sleeve where it is simply knotted to hold it. By holding his arm out completely straight and tugging at his cuff the knot will loosen and allow the knife to be freed. A headband contains numerous hidden pockets just large enough to hold a couple coins, small gem, or ring firmly within. These pockets are always on the side of the band that presses against the skin. Checking to see if his band has twisted is more than what it appears... Sleeves that are capable of tightening to hold objects within, freeing his hands. Many small pockets for holding things, like, my vials of aniseed. Pants: A flap that hides shark-skin material until pulled back. (sharkskin consists of thousands of tiny hooks sewn in, helps alot in climbing). Shoes: No ideas so far. Any help would be great |

Shoes?
go simple...split toed tabi. the soles usually give good traction, are ankle high so you can tuck in the pant leg (less noise when moving) and the split toe part help when climbing a rope, etc because there's that split part. Also think of Cul Culthain and his fight with Finnian MacCunhil (sp..sorry). He picked a spear up between his big and 2nd toe, so if your thief has the agility, he could maybe snag a spike and a front kick becomes more lethal. Just a thought. |

Don't forget the utility belt and batarangs.
Perhaps, with the cloak, have it reversable and a radically different color on the inside, to potentially throw off searching eyes. |

I really wouldn't suggest silk as the main fabric for a 'darksuit', to be honest. Silk has, from what I recall, this tendency to be shiny.
For thieves, this is a /bad/ thing since shiny things reflect light and can get them caught, killed or both. Also, you mentioned that you don't want the suit to seem out of the ordinary; asides from being shiny, silk tends to be expensive and unless the clothes your thief /normally/ wears suggest that such a cloth is within his price-range, I wouldn't use it. Heck, I wouldn't use it anyways, just because it's /shiny/ and when you're sneaking around in the dark, shiny things are /bad/, since they reflect torchlight, moonlight, starlight - you name it, they're probably going to reflect it. I'd suggest velvet, for preference, dyed cotton or something similar. Not silk. However, if you were to use Eagleon's idea, you /could/ use silk as the inner lining for the cloak, since as he said, something drastically different from the norm may throw off pursuers. But just the same, I'd advise against using it for the majority of the darksuit. Also, for the pants, you could include a hidden pocket for a knife. |

Hood was only to be silk because it easy rolls up. You can easily dye the silk and no more shiny shiny
And as for hidden pockets and such, those basic I have down, aye. Just thinking of really interesting things to do. |

Eh...whether or not the dye would stick well would probably depend on exactly what was used to dye it and how the fabric was treated. I'd still go with dyed cotton or something lightweight like that instead of silk, just to keep from risking the dye getting washed out or something. But, then, I tend to be very cautious. *shrugs*
If I missed the hidden-pockets bit in the list of basics, sorry. |
