This is a discussion on "2k/NT4 source leak" in the Top Mud Sites Tavern of the Blue Hand forum :

Slashdot has an article (so far backed up by the washington post, originated from neowin, and that's all I'm going to use to verify for now) that someone has taken either a large portion or all of Windows 2000 and NT4 source code. Should be interesting to see what comes of this, eh? -Visko...

According to Groklaw, it's a fairly small portion - about a CDs worth of source in a multi-gigabyte project - but PJ makes a warning to those who would look at such source:

Anyone looking at this code could bring to an end any opportunity to contribute to FOSS software in the future.

That's just copyright issues. Copyright isn't the only issue. Patents, trade secret, it's just a minefield. I hope the rumor is false, but if it isn't, please speak to your attorney and to FSF prior to even thinking about looking at such code.
