This is a discussion on "What Settings Do You Prefer?" in the Top Mud Sites Tavern of the Blue Hand forum :

What sort of setting do you prefer to play in? Obviously some of these choices are a bit similar while others are a bit vague (since they can encompass a wide variety of socio-cultural settings). Pick the one(s) that best describes your preference(s)....

Post apocalyptic is always fun. Many could learn from fallout 3. But the setting doesn't so much as matter as the people who are staffing the game. I could play in any setting if it had the right people behind it, driving the game.

A while I believed that I disliked modern/scifi games, even though I really enjoy scifi movies. To my great surprise when I played Fallout 3 I discovered scifi actually works in a game. Now I want more such games .

It seems pretty nice to be able to play different kind of themed games. A different setting than the same usual medieval fantasy setting can be quite nice for a change.

Re: What Settings Do You Prefer?

Since history is my field, I'm prone to favoring historical. Of course, with a lack of historical-based games, and the problems and limitations inherent in such a format, semi-historical and pseudo-historical are also acceptable. Plus, being a fan of Star Trek and science fiction in general, "space opera" is also fun. Cyberpunk would be ok but all too often it's limited to cliched forms, omitting the potential of the genre. The same goes for steampunk and post-apocolyptic SF.

Re: What Settings Do You Prefer?

I don't care too much about the genre as long as the mud is consistent.

For that reason I've always avoided muds with multiple themes or time periods.
