This is a discussion on "New MUD / Voting Database preview." in the Top Mud Sites TMS Announcements and Feedback forum :

If you click one of the 'info' links on the main rankings page you will see the mud database info from the new database rather than the old one. The actual URLs are still in the old style - it is a redirect to the new database so we don't lose those old DB pages that are indexed in search engines. When the database is fully in, the URLs will be cleaner (example: http://www.topmudsites.com/forums/mudinfo-darkmud.html) but right now the front page is still built from the old voting system. The new voting system is ...

New MUD / Voting Database preview.

The new voting system is running in parallel and updating every 30 minutes which you can see at http://www.topmudsites.com/test/t_index.html. Very little change to see on the main page really, there's more pages behind the scenes such as 'all time' and 'last voting period', but no point publishing them until it is ready.

Feel free to play around with it, but understand that this is pre-release. You might be browsing and see MUDs and/or rankings disappear temporarily - this is because the 30 minutes update is actually a full conversion of the old databases into the new one and takes a few minutes. Once this is fully live then that won't happen. If you follow some of the new vote URLs they might appear to do something but really won't because everything is reset from the live data every 30 minutes anyway.

The 'Help/FAQ' that is in place is very incomplete with the exception of "How to migrate your MUD to the new database" which you can read all about but not actually do yet - the code is there, but nobody has permissions set.

If you're a MUD owner with a MUD listed at TMS you're going to need a forum account to manage your MUD listings - but the good news is that's all you will need - not the 3 previous logins for forums/mudinfo database/voting database. You will also no longer need multiple logins if you manage multiple MUDs.

All history stats have been converted but there is no "stats" page yet, that's just eye candy for later. If anyone is using those stat pages in the old voting system, they will still be available until the same info is available in this one. I decided to stop endlessly tweaking the search page (it still needs some things like before/after on year created, more than/less than on average online, etc) and just get the important part in, the database.

Link with a couple of FAQ items you might find interesting:

Will get this switched over soon then reviews come next.

It looks quite good. Will you consider to make the MUD listing avaible to download for MUD client developers? E.g MudMagic allows download of their entire MUD list through RSS which is very useful as you can retrieve it and display it in your MUD client.

Re: New MUD / Voting Database preview.

Short answer is Yes, but there's a lot of junk in there right now.

I wrote a simple spider to go and capture the login screen of each mud. I need to make it store its results and try a few days in a row before flagging something inactive.

The original reason was just to have a little ajax popup on the mudinfo page with the login screen, the kind of stuff that's fun to play with once the rewrite is done, but that's a much more practical use for it.

Re: New MUD / Voting Database preview.

I like the look of the new MUD info database, seems to fit in more with the style of the forum. Perhaps it might be an idea to change the boxes on the front page to match? The layout doesn't really need to be fiddled with, but it would bring the whole site into a consistent scheme.
