Rules Section

  • What's a MUD?
Run while you can! A MUD is a very addicting multi-player fantasy game. It stands for Multi-User Dungeon. The majority have a Dungeons and Dragons theme, but there are ones based on sci-fi, the real world, and even Pokemon!

  • How can I qualify to have my site on the list?
If you run a web site that pertains to MUDs (or MUSHes, MOOs, MUD hosting, MUD clients, and so forth), whether it be for a specific MUD or about muds in general, then you can have your site on the list.

  • I'm still not on the list. What gives?
The Top MUD Sites will only list the top 100 sites, and those sites must have at least 1 vote to have a chance to be shown.

  • Do I have to put a voting button or link on my web site?
If you wish to be ranked on the list, you must have a voting link back to this site. A ranking list works because you send traffic to this site, and in turn you'll also receive traffic. You can choose not to participate in the ranking list voting, but still sign up with it. In that case, your site will only show when it comes up from a search.

  • Hey, all the votes were reset!
The votes are reset on the first of each month to give everyone a fair chance of getting to the top and to keep the voting process active. The site in first place at each vote reset gets rewarded with a "trophy" icon until the next reset, where as the trophy goes to the next person who is at #1.

  • What the difference between the ranking list and the MUD database?
The ranking list is for web sites pertaining to MUDs, while the database is specifically for MUDs. It's quite possible that you can have your site listed on the ranking list and your MUD listed in the database, or just listed in one of the two (perhaps you have a MUD but no web page).

  • What is the "info" icon?
The "info" icon means that the ranked web site is the official site to a MUD. Clicking on that icon will pop up some information about the MUD.

  • How do I get an "info" icon next to my site?
If your web page is the official site for a MUD, you can add your MUD to our other database. When you've added your web page and MUD into both our ranking list and database, go into "Edit your Site" and fill in the bottom two lines where it asks you if your MUD is in the database, and if so, what is the username you used for that database. Then at the next rerank you'll see the icon next to your site, and clicking it will pop up your database info.

  • How do I vote?
When you click on the vote button on another web site it takes you to a page asking if you'd like to enter the Top MUD Sites. If you enter, you will have cast a vote for the site you just came from.

  • How often can I vote?
Your vote will count only once every 12 hours. For the most part, the script will stop someone from inflating their votes. If I catch you cheating such as using open proxies, I'll give you a warning, then suspend you, then ban you from the list. The integrity of this site is based on the fact that cheating will not get you to the top, and that the rankings are as fair as they can be.

  • Can I automate the voting?
You can create tools to make it easier to vote for your MUD with a single click, but you cannot automate the voting entirely. TMS is a traffic exchange. Games send their players here to vote and they gain exposure to other MUDs while here. Players coming from other MUDs to vote get some exposure to your MUD. Automaing the voting boosts your ranking unfairly and undermines the integrity of the entire system. Games found distributing tools to automate their player's voting will no longer be listed in the rankings.

  • Can I offer rewards for voting?
You CANNOT offer incentives or rewards to players for voting. That means you cannot give players items, experience, or anything else in return for votes. You cannot display different messages based on whether someone voted or not, or reward a player for voting by not showing messages. You cannot have a system that ‘nags’ a player about voting in response to whether they’ve voted or not unless participation in the system is totally voluntary with no tangible positive or negative effects for a player choosing to use or not use such a system. Such a system must also allow a player to easily opt out of it at any time, also with no positive or negative effect, and it must be off by default. Your vote will count only once every 12 hours. • What does IN and OUT mean?
IN stands for the number of people that clicked on the Vote button on a web page to get to the Top MUD Sites List, and OUT is how many people have left this list to go to that site.

  • How can I write a review about a MUD?
Find the MUD in our database and you should see a link that will allow you to write a review. If the MUD isn't in our database or the admin has opted not to allow reviews, you won't be able to write a review. You might want to tell the admins of that MUD about this site, and if they sign up, you'll then be able to write a review about them.

  • I think someone is cheating. What do I do?
Email webmaster@topmudsites.com and it will be looked into.

  • Players from my site are trying to cheat. I can't control their actions
Much like a parent, you are responsible for what your little ones do. Make it well-known on your site/game that you will take measures against any player who is trying to cheat this system, and that it can only end up hurting the mud instead of helping it.

  • I have a suggestion/comment to make. Where do I do this?
You can either email me at webmaster@topmudsites.com or post a message on the forum.

  • How can I advertise on your site?

  • Where can I find your privacy statement?
    You can read it here.
