I was getting tired of reading all those flaming posts, so I figured, why not start this poll? I'm quite curious about what do you guys prefer in a MUD? If it has been done before, I'm sorry, I'm new here, but tell me where it is.
Cordially yours; Ruobhe |
I must say that this surprises me. Currently "a strong roleplaying environment" is in the lead. However, it seems that MUDs that are purely H&S are the ones that have the highest populations and active players (Realms of Despair, Aardwolf, Medievia). MUDs with "strong roleplaying environments" like Armageddon, Southlands, Marrach, etc., usually have significantly smaller player bases. Hmmm... Maybe this poll just attracts a different crowd than most MUDs.

At the time of posting, there were 29 votes. I'm sure you'll agree that 29 is hardly sufficient to provide any sort of accurate representation of the mudding community as a whole. Perhaps a better indication would be , which has (currently) been taken by 124909 people from 1601 MUDs.
Of course you have to remember that "roleplaying" is only a subset of Socialiser... |
|
hm,Im a socializer on all the tests, and I like rp a lot , but I still play just this lowly H&S Realms of Despair...
strange,eh ? but I dont think that socializers just rp..In fact, a lot of socializers I know dont like rp at all..even thought I myself rp a lot on that H&S mud..and Im not alone,in fact there are no less then 20 rp'ers always online.. I think that many roleplayers simply dont like being always IC.Sometimes some H&S and OOC/mindless chatter is much more fun.And it would be weird to change muds from one to another everytime you want to rp or chatter, dont you think so ? |
RoD has no RP. And if you somehow have managed to smoke enough crack to believe that drivel counts as RP....-shrug-
I reiterate - RoD has nothing that can be called RP in any shape or form. If you claim...that...is RP, you seriously need to find an RP mud. Any would do - Armageddon, a MUSH, etc. - and see real RP in action. -D |
dont worry about me,Dulan..I seen enough RP muds. And if you dont know what is called rp and what is not - its your problem,no need to start flaming again.
There is no absolute truth,ya know.. |
That was not a flame. It was a statement of fact.
While it can arguably be called "RP", it is like claiming a GW is written in C++. -D |

While RP is definately not the forefront of RoD, there is a small but strong RP community there.
The SMAUG codebase has been developed to be capable of not being exclusively H&S such that experience can be gained in many ways aside from striking blows and killing mobs. |
|
Yeah!
With people like Shao representing your "small but strong RP community", Thoric, who could ever possibly resist RP'ing at RoD? Heh. -D |
somehow,I cant imagine you in any community at all,Dulan..

My first reply or anything on this board.
I enjoy to go on adventures with people. It is teh base of any good game in my oppion. The whole PK side of things should happen when dfending honor, teritory, honor, clan/guild/organization name sake or other variables. More so i enjoy a good mix between adventure, getting eq. or parts to make eq. that others will not have, some REALLY good serious RP (where-in someone can keep up with my racing mind-state), exploration, and then most importantly a PVP system that allows a player to be shown as a famed PK'r and a pk system based on which orginization/clan/guild/race has a dominating side on the war. |
Hmm, the definition of roleplaying. Nice and arguable. First of all, about the claim that a game has a small RP community within it; that's not really possible, is it? Do these people never interact with anyone but those within the wee community? If they ever run into the H&Sers, who are the majority apparently, they've lost the reality of their character and the supposedly real world they live in. So it doesn't seem possible for a small RP community to exist within a larger H&S game.
Now, I played Dragon's Gate for years, and it's a very fun game to be sure. But I think it's best that you guys not try to sell yourselves as a hardcore RP game, as you are wont to do, to a community that knows about games like Armageddon, Harshlands, Otherspace, etc. While DGate has some amazing roleplayers who are wonderful at creating great stories, there's a limit to the level of immersion a player can get into just because of the way the code works, and the way the game is built; things like visible names, cutesy enter/exit messages, not much player contribution to the economy, no crafting (since I was last there, I know some crafting type things were planned on for the indefinite future), prevent a solid, realistic world from taking shape. Also, "an RP game" is perfectly correct. "R" the letter is pronounced "arr", which starts with a vowel. Illiterate hackenslasher. |
I think someone has a small inferiority complex...
|
Roleplay is pretty much whatever I am after nowadays. My time has been cut short by a lot of things, so roleplay is something I like the best out of the MUDs, so I want that.
|
|
guys, what's with you? this post was to see what kind of enviroment do you like in a MUD and gave a few choices for you to vote for what your personal view felt most accordingly , not to see a close to flamewar discussion about what is roleplay, mocking RP communities in H&S environments and making fun of lil' grammar mistakes for what I see, the definition of roleplay is very subjective to the one who sees it, so why bother?
Very preocupated: Ruobhe |
Personally, I go for H&S/RP in multiplayer games. I'd get very tired of roleplaying all the time- heck, I spend enough time in the Storytelling forums- and after a while hack & slash becomes mindnumbingly monotonous. Like Dungeon Siege, for example- click on enemy, press H key about 50 times, collect look, click on enemy, press H key about 50 times, collect loot, click on enemy.... etc
But it's good to have a nice mix. The label "RolePlaying Game" gets thrown about like mad these days. Dungeon Siege got it, and the closest you get to roleplaying in that is the odd quest. It's generally decided that if it involves swords, leather armor and fireballs, it's an RPG. They should start labelling games as Hack & Slash too. [EDIT: I've never had much experience of PK, so I wouldn't know what it's like. I hate the idea of it though. I'm all for everyone fighting alongside everyone else, and settling arguments over drinking contests.] (P.S. Cut the flames. If you wanna argue with people, go start a football riot.) |
