Password must be 6 to 8 characters
 

Once in a while I try out a MUD which sets a strict character limit to the password length, such as no fewer than 6 but no more than 8 characters.

Why is this still a thing in 2013?

Quite possibly the system being used has issues.

Isn't there a way of resetting such limits in the programing?

I would imagine there is, seeing as how the lion's share of MUDs I've tried permit up to 20 characters or thereabouts.

Most likely, it's just a signal that the game in question hasn't had an active coder recently. Coders are getting pretty rare and there are a lot of enthusiasts running servers just by "hacking" and applying mods shared by others. They would not know how to change something like this unless there's a "snippet" for it.
