List of RPIs that are Open, Closed and In-Development
I was having a conversation the other day with someone and they said that there were only three or four RPIs open or in development. This was the second person in an as many weeks to make that error because I knew there were more than that which were open to say nothing of many others which are still in development. While it's true that some of them are not advertising, they are still there. So I thought I'd put together a list from whatever information I had on the status of various RPIs.
This list contains all of the RPIs which are either open for play or still in development. Armageddon -- Open, though a revamp is supposedly in the works at some future date Atonement -- Pre-Alpha Black Sands -- Open Beta Dark Horizon -- Open but staff is apparently unresponsive Harshlands -- Open Scialla -- Pre-Alpha Shadows of Isidlur -- Open Southlands -- Open The Streets of Yesterday -- Pre-Alpha, starting over with new code (Unnamed Fantasy RPI) -- Pre-Alpha???? (Unnamed Steampunk RPI) -- Pre-Alpha???? The following list contains RPIs which are either closed or assumed so either because their websites have disappeared, no further word has been heard from them for years or some of their staff have turned up on other projects. Camino Real -- Closed Chronicles of Ritnarium -- Closed Dark Sun -- Closed Death's Omen -- Closed Forever's End 3 (as well as the original and FE2) -- Closed; see Subterranea Four Lands -- Assumed Closed; website still mentions them but port has been down Hadrian's Wall -- Closed Lost Tales of Beleriand -- Closed Mythic Shores -- Assumed Closed Shadows and Mist -- Closed; see Subterranea Stone -- Closed Subterranea -- Closed; Wade is now running Maiden Desmodus Syrian Sands -- Closed Urbana -- Closed Wild West -- Assumed Closed World of the Living Dead -- Assumed closed; no word on them in years World of Vale -- Assumed Closed; no word on them in years (Unnamed Medieval RPI) -- Assumed closed; no word on them since their initial announcement years ago If anyone has further information on any of these RPIs, including possibly the names I'm missing, or of others I'm not aware of, please let me know. I try to keep up-to-date on what's going on in the genre. Thanks. Jason Last edited by prof1515 : 09-15-2009 at 11:03 AM. |

Re: List of RPIs that are Open, Closed and In-Development
I would say now that NW Ateraan is out of Beta and has a harsher more intense side to it, it might fall on this list.
However, I'm guessing this list is solely based on the definition of an RPI MUD talked about a year or more ago and not just a Roleplay Intensive Mud, right? Just asking because I don't want to stir up that old heated argument and I don't want it added if you don't consider it part of your genre. Thank you. |

Yes, I'm just talking about traditional RPIs, not just RP-Enforced MUDs.

Thank you.
I think it would help alot of Administrators if you did a quick definition list of what a traditional RPI is. As we saw in the past when you review the listed RPI MUDs this can be very arbitrary on who follows everything on the list. |

Someone said that the new, updated version of Armageddon will be a separately-run game that will be operated simultaneously with the old. I'll have to look into this but if it's true, that would make 5-6 open-for-play RPIs (depending upon Dark Horizon's status) and 6 RPIs in development.

Re: List of RPIs that are Open, Closed and In-Development
Seems very odd. I would highly recommend not doing this unless they are changing the name for the new game or the functionality is so different it warrants another name. If that is the case use a new name.
Grab the bull by the horns and do a massive player wipe and start the new game. Surely a permadeath game can't be afraid of a little thing like playerwipe. |

Uh.. actually yes. Player wipes would make no sense in an RPI sense of the word. What is suddenly killing off all these characters? I think the plan is to do a world wide catastrophe to close the original mud. Supposedly they are tired of hearing that Armageddon is based off of Darksun, which it obviously is.

Re: List of RPIs that are Open, Closed and In-Development
Delerak's right on the money. A player wipe might be fine on a H&S but not on a game where there's an established history and culture which impacts role-play.
The question I asked is whether the new game will constitute simply an upgrade of Arm or if it will be a completely new game. From the sound of things, it's going to be a completely different game. Now the only real question is when that game will open. |
