My point was that the creators of the MUD put in a lot of time and effort into making that "graphical map", if there was one. They also have a good world scale set. The problem with what you suggested is that you can generally see quite far as far as terrain goes (not individual features) IRL if you're in the right position. But it'd spam the #### out of you if a mile were ten rooms each. You'd either have to decrease your visibility, or make major locations closer together. I think they struck a good balance.
