Where are the old school players
What happen to the player killing fanatics of the past?
I currently am the active administration for Everwar Rebirth Redux, and I have been updating the code and player wiping every year so far. One wipe is slow, another wipe gets very busy. I just wanted to see if some tavern people have the same problems with their muds. |

Wiping every year? Seems a bit too often and harsh.
Only done one player wipe in over 10 years and it was very well received. |

We've never done a pfile wipe. It's been literally over 20 years now. There has never been a need.

Re: Where are the old school players? Drawing their pension...
25 years plus character continuity on and discounting admins I think Zaphod (birth November 1989) might be the oldest character in any MUD or online game. Still puts in a cameo every note and then.
I don't think people believe nowadays that games used to actually shut down every hour for a total reset of everything except the user names and a points score. Reset would happen, players kicked out to wait for login prompt to come back. Then there'd be a crazy rush to get logged in and zoom around doing a few dozen little puzzles to gain points before puzzle find by somebody else and thus not gonna be back until next reset. Some wouldn't run for the puzzles once they'd gotten offer a certain score. They'd race for the weapon instead. Then choose somebody with a juicy score and KILL. The fight was auto. The result was predetermined. Weapon guy wins. Loser deleted. Winner gets a % if their points. These were the first killers. They were infamous in their day. |
