Actually...
The guy said ightning bolt 8 times. In standard AD&D, lightning bolt is a third level spell and to be able to cast it 8 times in a row, one needs to be at least level 32. For comparison, the most powerful mage in the Forgotten Realms (more or less standard AD&D setting, with appropriate respect to other settings) is Elminster of Shadowdale, who is "just" level 29. A for damage done by casting lightning bolt 8 times in a row, ignoring stuff like casting times and the fact lightning bolts travel, is 1d6 per level of caster up to a maximum of 10d6. So the big ugly person got hit with 8*(10d6) worth of damage, which is between 48 and 480 points worth of damage, which is enough to kill a 6 HD monster instantly even under the worst circumstances. |

He's just MUDing, probably a stock level 15 wizard who just got lightning bolt and has enough mana to spam it.
