Unlike many of the large games in our mud list, including MMORPGs and MUDs that call themselves this, our game isn't focused on getting "uber", and beating other players in fights because your character is more "uber". Instead, we are going in a completely different direction - a nuanced, balanced combat system that sets us apart from our competitors. It isn't right for everyone, as anyone who's played this type of game knows, but for those that enjoy it, there's no acceptable substitute.
As you probably know, while the commercial muds are doing great with their playerbases, many of the free muds in the top 40 are doing pretty terrible. Compared with those, we're pretty happy with what we've got at AR. Our playerbase is consistent and steady, and we have automated surges (double-exp periods) to reel in players at certain key times, so you're guaranteed some action at any level then. You'll find pretty constant activity from high levels, especially clan/cabal-related, and the tavern's Whirlwind Poker fanbase. We spent a lot of time making sure that the tools are there to learn the way around the realms, including a quest system that's purposely designed to guide you through those most difficult early levels, and a detailed ascii map is available for those who can't cope without the pictures. No need for a mud newbie to feel intimidated at the prospect of trying out this mud. All this and more: telnet abandonedrealms.com 9000 |

"AD" as in "Advert", I assume. I wish more muds did that, it makes it much easier to tell from the "Recent Forum Discussions" on the front page which posts are adverts and which are discussions.

I'd agree to an extent, but I'd like to see advertisements taken out completely. Or at least the ability to bump them within a month or so. Every now and then you see a MUD post, then bump their advertisement every few days to keep it on the main page. Annoying.

It's a bit outdated and the definitions are oriented toward a specific type of MUD format yet interesting. I couldn't help but notice numerous errors while reading it. Seems it could definitely use proofreading. I'd offer a few definitions and corrections but there's apparently been no update since 2000 so I'm not sure anyone is updating it.
