Just a thought but if you're looking to recruit players you might do well not to begin with an insult. If I were a new player looking for a MUD, I'd take your attitude to be a sign to pass on by. Remember, service with a smile!

Re: Looking to Swell our Playerbase
That was not an insult in any way, sorry you took it that way.
But if you did then perhaps you were looking for an insult to be there? It was worded the way it was so that people realised this is a realm for EXPERIENCED players not people who are new players to the mud experience. I am a very friendly easy going person who has done more for his players then you will ever know. I do not have the time to hold the hands of people who need that sort of attention. I am the only immortal in my realm and have enough on my hands with building and coding to do such things. Once again, if anyone takes it as an insult then I am sorry, it was NOT intended that way. Re: Looking to Swell our Playerbase
That's fine but you could have worded it differently and still achieved the same effect.
You wrote, "We want some experienced players who don't need an immortal around to hold their hand" when you could simply have said, "We want some experienced players who don't need an immortal around" and achieved the same purpose. No problem. The internet is such a difficult means sometimes of expressing intent, or lack thereof, so sometimes it helps not to muddy the waters with phrases or words that could be misconstrued as meaning something they don't (something I know from personal experience, heh). ![]() Take care, Jason |

Strike 2.
Strike 3. I don't know what exactly what you are trying to say, but the way you are saying it is shockingly aggressive and presumptive. I believe that was prof's advice. Marketing is about perceptions. While your motives behind the post may be pure, the way you say it often matters a lot more. |

Re: Looking to Swell our Playerbase
Very much agree. MUD reputations (and marketing for them) are very, very fragile things - I think mostly because the community is just so oversaturated with them. All it takes is one thing that a prospective player doesn't like, and you can forget about them, they'll just go hunt through some of the other thousands of games out there. In fact, you're lucky if they give you 10 minutes of honest appraisal. I find myself talking about this on my MUD-related blog (see signature if you're interested) a lot, simply because when there's that much competition, every word is critical. Even misspelling a single word can make a huge difference, because people see that and instantly form a perception, that whoever wrote the ad doesn't care enough to make sure that everything is spelled correctly. Is it harsh and judgmental? Yes, a lot of the time. People don't do it to be shallow, but because there are just so many options out there, dropping 1% on the prospective player's internal test may be enough to get them to move on.
