I was debating what I could post to attract more players to Adventures Unlimited (telnet: tharel.net port 5005) as I have posted many promotions for our mud over the last 7+ years. I decided that instead of listing the many features of the mud (of which there are many) or speaking about the mostly original world (80% of 10000+ rooms) or writing about the excellent roleplaying and nifty players; I will tell you why I love Adventures Unlimited and why it is special to me.
I am one of two coowners of AU. I have spent 7 years working on improving the mud. I have built areas, developed religions, written stories and histories, ran quests, met tons of players, helped newbies, coded new features, socialized, roleplayed and idled. There is not much on AU that I have not had some sort of hand in. I love how it has evolved from a stock Rom mud into a living breathing organism - we have players who have been with us from the first year until now. I love Adventures Unlimited and that is why I still work on it regularly. I like to log on and see the staff members. I like getting on the out of character channel and speaking with the players, they are actually happy to see me. I like knowing I have a place to go where everyone knows my name (heh). AU may not be the biggest mud around. In fact, lately our player base has been a little smaller but it is home. So please take the time to come and check out this mud. I cannot promise you that it will be what you are looking for but I can promise that you will be welcome. We are still looking for more players. Here's an incomplete feature list that at least represents a sample of what we have:
Religion/Temple System * 15 unique gods and temples with different profiles, rules, and goals. * 10 temple ranks, from a mere follower to one of the mortal leaders of a religion * Gods are often available for RP * Devotion rewards for good RP * quest and fulfill duties for your deity * Changing attitudes of gods to each other, reacting on theworld's RP * Excommunication * Rank approval by your peers (only the highest ranks require approval) Questing * Advanced quest system, selecting quest targets and areas depending on your alignment, temple, and skill (level). * A list of unique items purchasable with the rewards. * Mob list quests as a challenge to gain HUGE amounts of quest points with a HUGE risk as well. * Soul collecting to save souls for your god (and keep them from the other gods) World * Over 10 000 rooms * Over 4,000 different mobs * Over 6,500 different objects * Mostly unique areas, only few stock areas which are in the process of being replaced * Exploring bonus, can also be used to buy quest items. * No death traps * Many areas for every level range, including a survival training area for newbies, acting as a tutorial * ANSI Automapper, always showing the surrounding rooms PK System * PK System is optional * In order to join, player has to submit a set of motivations, prejudices and aims * PK attacks, thefts, and looting have to be according to the character's motivations * Level restrictions to keep fights fair and exciting * Sparring possibility in an arena, where no motivation is necessary for a fight (must be mutual) Clans * currently 10 clans * completely player run * sophisticated help files, including RP guidelines, histories and rules * ranking system within clans * special clanskills/clanspells, unique to each clan * special clan channel per clan, player regulated * overthrowing of leaders (votes) * based on the religions of Tharel * invasions Activities * Days of Redemption, a huge immortal ran event in which everyone can participate * Conquering (PK only), finding the ownership flag and magic hidden orb of an area, and thus obtaining control over it. * Mayoral Elections (once per RL month) * Huge RP events, initiated by players and supported by Immortals (for example, burning of a town) * Rod of Destruction (seeking out splinters or sections of a Rod of immense power, trying to assemble it for your deity) Main City * Player run by elected government * Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Sheriff * Special commands for government to levy taxes, assess clans, fine characters, exile them, arrest them, or put them into the stocks * Customizable set of guards, so they fit into RP theme of current government Communication * A set of public, global channels, specially adapted for certain needs and togglable * IC channels are justified by use of a magical mirror system. * A huge set of socials to abbreviate common used emotes.
